international competition for the new the new justice palace of Catania
The project for the New Judicial Offices in Catania is an urban regeneration operation rather than a simple building project.
The building is designed as a green infrastructure, capable of reconnecting the city to its waterfront and transforming a marginal area into an active and recognisable public space.
The roof, the defining element of the entire composition, slopes gently towards the sea and becomes a park that is accessible to the community. A large green staircase leads visitors upwards, gradually revealing the view of the cliffs and transforming the judicial complex into a place of passage and encounter.
The architecture strikes a balance between openness and security: the hall on Viale Africa represents the public and institutional front, while the offices face the sea, favouring light, silence and environmental quality. Inside, a system of green courtyards introduces private spaces for interaction, ensuring comfort and flow control.
The complex is designed as a sustainable smart building, with a mixed steel-concrete structure, high planimetric modularity and maximum distributive flexibility.
Energy sustainability is integrated into the envelope and green roof, complemented by photovoltaic and micro-wind systems and microclimate control strategies.
