EX CEM

Regeneration of a former industrial complex transformed into a cultural space

2025

Catania

EX CEM is an architectural regeneration project that transforms a former industrial complex into a new space dedicated to culture, socialising and public enjoyment. The project stems from a desire to preserve the site’s productive identity, reinterpreting the existing structures through a contemporary language capable of breathing new life into a significant architectural heritage.
The large industrial naves, characterised by wooden trusses and massive stone walls, become the focal point of the project. These spaces, originally intended for production, are reinterpreted as open and flexible environments for cultural events, exhibitions and collective functions. The historic chimney remains an iconic element of the complex, a vertical reminder of its industrial origins and a recognisable landmark in the landscape.
The project introduces a sequence of outdoor public spaces that interact with the existing architecture. Gardens, pedestrian paths and green squares redefine the relationship between buildings and landscape, transforming the area into a system of places that can be traversed and experienced.
The architecture does not erase the history of the site, but makes it legible through a balance between conservation and new interventions.
