Completion and conversion of a derelict building into a contemporary home

2022

Sicily

The project stems from the restoration of a ruin situated on the slopes of Mount Etna, reinterpreted through a programme of completion and change of use that gives it a new residential identity. The architecture builds upon the existing structure, adopting its proportions, orientation and relationship with the landscape as the project’s foundational elements.
The intervention does not seek to create a contrast between the new and the existing, but rather establishes a measured continuity, in which the new architecture is grafted onto the original ruin. The volume is organised around a large pitched roof that defines a spacious and light-filled interior, characterised by a strong sense of verticality and a direct relationship with the outdoors.
Natural light is a primary design element, filtered through large openings and glazed surfaces that connect the interiors with the surrounding landscape.
The connection between the lower and upper floors is provided by a staircase, which becomes a sculptural element and serves as the project’s distributive hub and defining feature.
Externally, the design opens out onto the garden and the Etna landscape, creating a sense of continuity between architecture and nature. The textured surfaces, warm tones and use of wood help to create an intimate and welcoming domestic atmosphere, capable of engaging with its surroundings without blending into the background.
