The project involves the interior refurbishment of a building in the historic centre of Taormina, through a process of reimagining the spaces based on continuity, materials and light.
The design moves away from a traditional, fragmented layout to create a unified system.
Natural light is treated as a design material: filtered, reflected and modulated through surfaces, screens and textures, it generates a sequence of atmospheres that changes throughout the day. The interplay between smooth surfaces, wooden elements and ceramic materials helps to strike a balance between warmth and abstraction.
The interior spaces open outwards through a system of loggias and screened surfaces, which offer a contemporary reinterpretation of the Mediterranean themes of filtering and thresholds. The result is an intimate yet permeable architecture, capable of engaging with the historic context without imitating it.
